One of my favorite movies of late is the story of a Netflix series called Dark Crystal : The age of resistance. I haven’t seen the new series yet, but it was very interesting to see what the game would look like. When I first saw it last year, I was glad they decided to develop it as a tactical RPG in the same vein as Disgaea. As a fan of strategy games, this RPG seemed like the perfect combination of intellectual property and the genre I usually enjoy. Does the formula work here? Read on to find out!

I think it would be pretty obvious that you would side with Gelfling and fight Skexis. I feel like the story is just a way to experience the show – a way to nest different tactical scenarios, if you will. Augra, the character in the film, begins by introducing you to the characters on your list.  You choose who you want on your team for each battle, just like in other tactical games. There is plenty of entertainment, but without the pretense of being completely original. In the end, each Disgaea track was essentially a repeat of the last, but they were all amazing in their own way.

A fight in the beginning gives me a canvas to paint a picture of what you’re about to experience.  Let’s start with three Gelflings. It doesn’t matter who they are, because they don’t want to deprive you of a script, whether you’ve seen the show or not.  Fleeing the result of the previous battle, you find your team in a toxic swamp. At the beginning of the conversation, one of the Gelflings advises you to stay away from the water because it is toxic.  This is the case when you learn that a certain type of Gelfling is impervious to danger and can move freely in and out of the water.  You must use this to your advantage by baiting your enemies with toxic mud so that they suffer environmental damage in battle. You will find that using the terrain to your advantage will be just as useful as any weapons and armor you get.

As with any tactical RPG, you earn money that you use to buy items, weapons, armor and everything else you need for each battle.  In total, there are over 50 scenarios to work on, so you can spend hours on content. To say they are complicated is actually an understatement.  From the beginning I found it difficult. Let me give you another clue, because the goal of another early battle was to get out of the area. For some reason, this stupid story fell on my shoulders and I paid no attention.  Skexis came in and started beating my team. I attacked him and thought I could do something.  It quickly became clear that I needed a few more people on the team to do something.  I also recognized a certain character from the movie, so I assumed he couldn’t be killed. I was able to complete the level, but Gelfling was defeated.

The graphs are well done and are very nice. The artists did a great job with the character models, which seem to come straight out of a movie or series. I like the music in the game, but I don’t know if it’s from the show or not.  I apologize for not watching the show to verify that. But I’m probably doing myself a disservice if I play the game before watching the Netflix series.

Each type of character, Gelfling, Podling and Fitzig, has its own secondary goal that it can set for itself.  This way you can add the skills your team members need to beat each level.  The first time around, I discovered that I usually failed missions because I didn’t know what kind of characters I needed to succeed. I’ve tried to use a good mix of character types and tasks, but I’ve found that there are times when you don’t know what you need. Of course you can repeat them, so you have as many attempts as you want to get all your players to the maximum level of 99.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of the show or the movie, because Dark Crystal : Age of Resistance Tactics is a solid tactical RPG that will give you a lot of fun to play and is well worth the price of admission. It may take some trial and error to figure out how to get through it in some areas, but I enjoyed it!

Black crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is a fun and interesting tactical title that will entertain you for hours and give you as much fun as you want.  Take your time and explore all it has to offer by completing side quests and learning the strengths and weaknesses of each character type.
